Bafut Unites for Peace and Fun in Historic Socio-Cultural Jamboree

In a spectacular display of community spirit, over 400 residents of Bafut, including women, men, youths, and children, gathered for a socio-cultural jamboree organized by COWOPNET (community women peace builders network) and CAGEAD (Center for advocacy in gender equality and action for development), sponsored by ALVF (Association de la lutte contre les violences faites aux femmes). The event is part of the project titled "Community Driven Actions for the Promotion of Grassroots Women Participation in Peace Building through Awareness Raising on UNSCR1325”, marked a significant milestone in the community's journey towards healing and peace, after being plagued by crisis for over eight years.

The jamboree was a resounding success, with participants enjoying a range of games, including the ring game, filling the basket, seize the item, egg race, thug of war, football, and handball. The atmosphere was electric, with dance groups performing lively displays that got everyone in the mood.

The women of Bafut, particularly those from the peace clubs in Njibujang, Manka’a, Mbebali, and Manji, played a crucial role in mobilizing the community for the event. Armed with knowledge gained from their peace clubs under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325), they helped bring the community together for a day of fun and celebration.

In Bafut, the peace clubs under UNSCR 1325 have empowered women to take on leadership roles and promote peace in their community. The jamboree was a testament to the impact of this initiative, bringing together community members in a celebration of peace and unity.

The event concluded with community members expressing heartfelt appreciation for the organizers, saying they had not experienced such joy and fun in a long while, and like Oliver Twist, they want more.

Mrs. Chemuta Brunhilda Sirri, a peace club member from Njibujang said, they are so happy because eversince the crisis began, they have not had an activity like this one that brought together women, men, youths and children, and looking at everybody’s face, you could see joy. She calls on COWOPNET, to organize such activities more often in their community.

The socio-cultural jamboree marked a significant step towards healing and rebuilding in Bafut, and serves as a model for community led peacebuilding initiatives. As the community looks to the future, the hope is that such events will become a regular occurrence, fostering a culture of peace and unity that will benefit generations to come.
