UNSCR1325: Nurturing Change with COWOPNET in Cameroon's Northwest

In the heart of Cameroon's Northwest Region, a network woven with threads of resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to peace is rising. This is COWOPNET, a network of community women peacebuilders born from the visionary efforts of CAGEAD. Through their project, "Community Driven Actions for the Promotion of Grassroots Women Participation in Peacebuilding Through Awareness Raising UNSCR1325,"in partnership with the ‘Association de la Lutte contre les Violences faites aux Femmes’ (ALVF), a quiet revolution is taking root, one community at a time.

The journey began with a vital mission to empower women. From an initial pool of 150 passionate participants, 90 women leaders, 15 per Division have been identified, meticulously trained, and equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complex landscape of conflict and reconciliation. These women, representing the six divisions of Momo, Boyo, Bui, Ngoketunjia, Mezam, and Menchum, were not just participants; they are now the vital focal points for peacebuilding efforts within their respective communities. They are the anchors, the connectors, the voices that will echo the message of harmony and understanding.

But the work doesn't stop with individual empowerment. Recognizing that sustainable peace requires collective action, COWOPNET has fostered the creation of 11 vibrant peace clubs across the six divisions. These clubs are more than just gatherings; they are dynamic hubs of activity, designed to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of the peace ambassadors' efforts. In line with the principles of UNSCR1325, these clubs are the bedrock upon which a lasting peace infrastructure will be built.

This initiative’s dedication to legality and inclusion is what makes it so brilliant. There is more than one way the peace groups are working. Collaboration with local authorities is a key component of the initiative. For the peace clubs to be officially recognized and incorporated into the current peacebuilding systems, this cooperation is essential.

Their legitimacy will be strengthened by the strategic alignment, which will also guarantee their sustainability and make sure that their influence lasts well beyond the project’s initial phase.

Change is being sparked by these women leaders and their peace clubs in communities dealing with the fallout from war. They are promoting a culture of empathy and understanding, settling conflict and encouraging dialogue.  They are demonstrating that peace is not an abstract concept but a tangible reality that can be built from ground up, through the dedication and collective action of ordinary people. COWOPNET, powered by CAGEAD, is a testament to the transformative power of investing in women. By providing them with tools, knowledge and platforms to lead, they are unlocking a wealth of potential for peace building. These women are not just building clubs, they are building bridges, healing wounds and cultivating a future where peace will flourish in every corner of the Northwest region of Cameroon. The seeds of peace have been sown, and with the continuous dedication of COWOPNET, the harvest promises to be bountiful.
